Friday Sessions:

Owl Prowl

Friday, August 13th 7:30PM – 8:30PM

Whoooo goes there? Join us as we conduct a survey of owls within Blue Heron Park, while learning about native raptor species and their awesome adaptations. This nighttime adventure is best experienced by the light of the moon so flashlights and head lamps are discouraged.


FrogWatch USA: Monitoring Session

Friday, August 13th 8:00PM – 9:00PM

Become a citizen scientist at this year’s SI BioBlitz and discover how you can help frogs and toads in our environment by identifying and monitoring their unique vocal calls.  FrogWatch USA is a nationwide program that monitors and tracks amphibian populations by collecting data with help from volunteers like you!   Your data is valuable in assessing the health and biodiversity of local amphibian populations, and you may also have a chance to monitor your favorite wetland with your family, friends, or scout troop. Community service credit is available. Please, bring a headlamp and sturdy shoes. Ages 8+

Staten Island Native Plant Hike

Saturday, August 14th 9:00AM – 10:00AM

Join local botanist and Staten Island Native Plant Society board member Alan Pieluszynski, and learn about the Island’s the plant life, past and present. This informative walk will the hidden gems found within Staten Island’s remaining woodlands.


Turtle Haul

Saturday, August 14th 10:00AM – 11:00AM

Turtles have been on our planet for over 100 million years and are some of the most beloved inhabitants of our parks. Please join our herp team for a walk to the pond to see how many of these ancient creatures our team can “haul out” of the water.


Pond Ecology Walk

Saturday, August 14th 11:00AM – 12:00PM

Join the Urban Park Rangers on this community science project where we count and identify wildlife living in our ponds. Learn about what’s under the water’s surface, but also what lives above the water.


Fungi & Micro-Ecosystems Hike

Saturday, August 14th 1:00PM – 2:00PM

Summer is a great time to hike the forest and marvel at mushrooms and other wonders of the seasons. Join Park Rangers on a walk to learn all about the beautiful decomposers found throughout Blue Heron Park. We will take a closer look at these fascinating fungi and learn basic mushroom identification.


Insect & Dragonfly Hike

Have you ever chased butterflies, collected fireflies or rolled a log to see what dwelled beneath it? Insects are the largest group of animals on earth —there are millions of different kinds. During this year’s Staten Island Bio Blitz (2021) join us in exploring the world of insects, in particular dragonflies!
