ADMINISTRATION
Description:
Assist the Zoo’s staff with clerical and administrative duties as determined.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Data entry, and/or typing
• Filing
• Sorting and collating
• Photocopying
• E-mail/phone calling
Requirements/Expectations:
• Complete required training and orientation, and follow Zoo policies and standards
• Computer skills and ability to use MSOffice a plus, but not necessary
• Ability to interact comfortably with Zoo staff
Time Required:
• Weekly hours, depending on need
Education
Description: Assist the education department with special events, programs, and projects around the education office.
Duties:
• Assist at special events
• Assist education staff and interns with paid and public programming
• Man arts and crafts tables
• Design the Display Case
• Assist with light clerical duties: such as, phone calls, mailings, posters
*If you have gone through the Docent Training and would like to become a volunteer, you are still able to assist with leading groups through the zoo and interpreting at exhibits.
Requirements:
• Complete required training and orientation, and follow Zoo policies and standards
• A background in teaching or public speaking is a plus
• Volunteer on a consistent basis
• No Meetings required, but you are more then welcome to attend
This position does not include animal handling.
Special Events’ Crew
Description:
Assist the Zoo with Special Events:
For example the biggest events- Festa Italiana in June and
Spooktacular in October
Duties
• Assist with particular zones at Spooktacular
• Man activity and game tables
• Man arts and crafts tables
Requirements
• Follow Zoo policies and standards
• No minimal hourly requirements, no mandatory meetings, does not need to attend docent training course.
This position does not include animal handling.
Volunteer Summer Opportunities
(Which can continue throughout the year, after a review)
You must be at least 14 to volunteer. If you are interested in volunteering at the zoo, these are the opportunities we have available for the summer:
Children's Center Volunteers: anyone who wants to help with the Children's Center, the barn yard. We need hard working volunteers who will be willing to help clean, feed and care for the Zoo's domestic collection.
Zoofari Camp Volunteers: anyone who wants to help with camp during the summer. We need volunteers that have experience working with children and/ or animals. These volunteers will assist teachers with the crafts, games, snacks, and preparation for the days activities.
Docent
Description:
Assist the Education Department with interacting with guests while interpreting the Zoo’s collection, and participating in the Zoo’s educational programs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Presentations (Education Animals, Exhibit Animals, and Biofacts)
• Participate in Special Events and/or Programs
Requirements/Expectations:
• Complete and pass Docent Course held in Feb and March (10 week course)
• Follow Zoo policies and standards
• Attend 5 out of 11 monthly docent meetings and 5 out of 11 monthly committee meetings
• Must be 18 years of age (out of high school)
Time Required:
• A minimum of 6 hours a month or 72 hours a year
Jr. Docent
Description:
Assist the Education Department with interacting with guests while interpreting the Zoo’s collection, and participating in the Zoo’s educational programs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Presentations (Education Animals, Exhibit Animals, and Biofacts)
• Participate in Special Events and/or Programs
Requirements/Expectations:
• Complete and pass Docent Course held in Feb and March (10 week course)
• Follow Zoo policies and standards
• Attend 1-2 yearly meetings
• Must be 14-18 years old
Time Required:
• A minimum of 5 hours a month. During the school year the hours are completed on the weekends. During the summer the hours are completed on the week days.

Animal Care
Overall Description
The Animal Care Internship offers students the opportunity to assist the Zoo’s Animal Department with the aspects of daily husbandry and routine care of its collection.
Qualifications
The internship is open to students who are currently enrolled, or recently graduated (within 1 year) in 2 or 4 year degree-granting program at an accredited college or university. Students must be enrolled in one of the following acceptable fields of study: biology, environmental science, veterinary technology, zoology, or other related majors. Past experience in animal husbandry is a plus, but not a necessity. However, students must be comfortable working with animals. The Zoo will provide on-the-job training.
Requirements
Students must be able to meet the minimum internship length requirement of 3 months. Also, students are required to work a minimum of one, 8 hour shift per week. The internship is not available on Sundays and Mondays. This internship area has a maximum capacity of 5 students, with no more than two students working the same shift/day.
Duties
This internship allows students to assist keeper staff with all aspects of daily husbandry for the Zoo’s collection, including feeding, cleaning, and routine exhibit maintenance.
The internship takes students around the Zoo through rotations intended to provide maximum exposure to the Zoo’s animal collection. The first rotation is within the Children’s Zoo. During this rotation and all rotations, students gain an understanding of what it is like to work for a Zoo of this size. Students are then sent to the Commissary where they assist with preparing the necessary diets for the Zoo’s collection. Students are then brought into the Zoo’s main building, and begin rotations through the African Savannah, Aquarium, and Tropical Rainforest to gain experience in each of these specific collections.

Wildlife Educator/ Animal Care
Overall Description
The Wildlife Educator/ Animal Care Internship offers students the opportunity to assist the Zoo’s Education Department. Students will gain experience in public speaking, interpretation, educational programming, and teaching in both formal and informal situations. Students will also help with the aspects of daily husbandry and routine care of its education collection (30+).

The internship is open to students who are currently enrolled, or recently graduated (within 1 year) in 2 or 4 year degree-granting program at an accredited college or university. Students must be enrolled in one of the following acceptable fields of study: biology, education, environmental science, veterinary technology, zoology, or other related majors. Past experience in animal husbandry is a plus, but not a necessity. However, students must be comfortable working with all types of animals. The Zoo will provide on-the-job training.

Students will assist Education Department staff with educational programs for grades K-8 on and off Zoo grounds, and perform daily informal education for Zoo guests. Students will work collaboratively with staff to develop and evaluate curriculum and lesson plans for paid and unpaid programs, and assist with clerical duties and research.
Students will also assist daily with the routine animal care necessary for the Education Department’s animal collection.

Vet Technician Student
Overall Description
The Veterinary Technician Student (Vet. Tech.) Internship offers students the opportunity to assist the Zoo’s Animal Department with daily animal care and routine veterinary work in the Animal Hospital and Nursery.
Qualifications
The internship is open to students who are currently enrolled, or recently graduated (within 1 year) in a veterinarian program. Past experience in animal hospitals is a must. The Zoo will provide on-the-job training.
Requirements
Students must be able to meet the minimum internship length requirement of 3 months. Also, students are required to work a minimum of two, 8 hour shift per week; one of those days must be a Thursday. This internship area has a maximum capacity of 1 student at any given time. Students must also have prior experience in a veterinary clinic. Students must be comfortable working with all types of animals. The Zoo will provide on-the-job training.
Duties
Students will assist the vet tech staff with all aspects of daily husbandry for the exotic and domestic collection in the Zoo’s Hospital and Nursery, including feeding, cleaning, and routine exhibit maintenance. Students will also get the opportunity to assist veterinary staff with administering medical treatments and lab work.
