AMERICAN CROW

Corvus brachyrhynchos

Animal Description

At The Zoo

Harriet was found in the forest as a juvenile. She walked up to a person who was hiking with his dog, and opened her mouth expecting him to feed her! The man knew this was not typical behavior. A baby crow approach two creatures she should view as predators! Thankfully, he picked her up and brought her to a bird rehab, where it was discovered that she was imprinted on humans. It’s suspected that she was taken as a nestling by someone who tried to keep her as a pet, then decided to release her back into the forest. Unfortunately, she was exposed to humans at a young age long enough for her to lose her natural fear of people and prevent her from integrating with other crows. This means she would not be able to survive in the wild, and needed to find a place that could care for her, particularly where she could act as an ambassador for her species. The Staten Island Zoo gladly answered the call, and now she helps educate our visitors on corvid intelligence and the importance of respecting wildlife! If you happen to visit her, make sure to say, "Hello Harriet!" She may thank you with a special trill vocalization!
